This Day In History, 1944: The Normandy Invasion
On this day 73 years ago, the Allied Expeditionary Forces, under the overall command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, descended on the shores of Normandy, France, and helped pave the way for the end of World War II. (From the Washington Post, read it here.)
If you're interested in President Eisenhower, and I admit I am, I recommend Ike, An American Hero, by Michael Korda.
