Another Kennedy Story

Issue dated July 10, 2017: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

People frequently runs a John and Carolyn story in July or August, tied to the anniversary of their July 16, 1999 death in the plane crash, always promising to reveal the truth or the untold story:

Issue dated August 1, 2016
Would JFK Jr. Have Run for President? His Best Friends Reveal His Last Days| George, Jacqueline Bisset, John F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr.

Issue dated August 18, 2014
John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette: The Way They Were

This year they're focusing on Carolyn and when I first saw the cover, I was intrigued. I find Carolyn fascinating and I'd love to know her untold story, if there is one. I assumed the cover story was tied to a new book written by someone close to her, but I was wrong. In the story currently posted at people.com, there's nothing about a new book and not much new information. It has some on-the-record quotes from friends and one of John's cousins, but there's no deep insight about this woman who died 18 year ago at age 33. (Read it here.)

I was three-for-three on the topline/sidebar stories. Camilla, Kim K and both Celebrity Weddings were on my Guessing Game list this week.

A Break From The Blog

Every now and then I take a break from the blog, and for the next few weeks we'll be in one of those times. I'll probably post the new People cover every week, but the guessing game, The Bachelorette and all the other stuff will be missing for a while. I'm also going dark on Twitter and Instagram.

It's not forever, I just need to focus on other things right now. See you soon!

The Guessing Game

What will be on the cover of People this week? My guesses:

The days had long gone when princes could flagrantly exercise a royal droit de seigneur and sleep with other men’s wives, as Edward VII had done, and the once compliant Press could no longer be relied upon to protect the Crown from scandal
photo from dailymail.co.uk

The Duchess of Cornwall: I had Camilla on the list a few weeks ago; she's back this week because of a new biography by Penny Junor, called The Duchess, The Untold Story. (Read an excerpt at the Daily Mail here.) Most of what's in this first excerpt is the "same old, same old" of the Charles and Camilla story, except for one tidbit that I've never heard before:

Intriguingly, Camilla’s grandmother — Alice’s daughter Sonia — was more probably the daughter of the King than she was of Alice’s husband. Which meant that Charles and Camilla might well be related.

Really? The fact that Camilla's great-grandmother, Alice Keppel, was the long-time mistress of Charles' great, great-grandfather, King Edward VII, is well known. Was Alice's daughter Sonia the "love child" of the king? Junor's language is squishy. She only goes so far as to say that Sonia was "more probably" the king's daughter and that Charles and Camilla "might well be related," which is a bit of a cop-out. If grandma Sonia really was the king's daughter then Camilla and Charles are absolutely related. (If this juicy and delicious gossip is true, and if my genealogical charting is correct, C & C would be half second cousins, once removed.)

I say DNA tests all around.

The new book will be published in England on June 29; it won't be available here in the states, at least according to Amazon, until March 13, 2018.

Other possibilities:
Kim & Kanye: Hiring a surrogate to carry baby #3
Tara Lipinski and/or Erin Andrews: Celebrity Weddings
The Bachelor In Paradise scandal: Warner Brothers finds "no misconduct," filming resumes without DeMario and Corinne
George Clooney: A billion-dollar deal for his tequila business (with partner Rande Gerber, who's married to Cindy Crawford)
Jake Zyrus: A Glee stars transitions female to male
Steven Mnuchin: The Treasury Secretary also got married this week-end. VP Mike Pence officiated and POTUS, FLOTUS and Ivanka were in attendance. As usual, Melania looks thrilled:

To be fair there's also a picture of Melania posing with the happy couple with a smile on her face, you can see it here.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the first pictures of Trump and his family members to be featured on People's cover since the election were at someone else's wedding?

What A Great Picture

I have to share this post from Rachel's Instagram page. Rachel looks great, and my bet is that the woman she's with, Channing Dungey, was the primary driver behind Rachel's selection as the first black Bachelorette. I wrote about Ms. Dungey in my episode 1 post, read it here.

Never Mind (And Episode 4)

Wednesday afternoon update: I meant to update and include the Instagram numbers list. I copied and pasted the list from my post about episode 3, then added today's numbers. So you're seeing the progression from May 30 to June 6 to today.

Bryan 11,500 --> 23,700 --> 45,800
Peter 35,700 --> 62,400 --> 97,100
Eric 6,438 --> 7,792 --> 13,600
Jonathan 761 --> 927 -> 1,252
Kenny 8,147 --> 10,000 --> 13,600
Dean 18,400 --> 40,300 --> 105,000
Josiah 5,433 --> 7,442 --> 10,900
Blake E 6,551 --> 6816 --> 7,125
Lucas/Whaboom 12,100 --> 13,200 --> 14,700

Who's the biggest winner this week? Dean, AKA @deanie_babies, by a mile, with Peter in second place. Amazing what a good one-on-one date will do. How many followers does Rachel have? 610,000.

Original post:

The Bachelor In Paradise scandal is over and it turns out there wasn't much there there. This press release from Warner Brothers makes it sound like the whole thing was much ado about nothing which makes me wonder how it became such a big deal in the first place. Did the decision-makers overreact when they closed up shop and sent everyone home? Shutting down production of a network show is a big, big deal, with a lot of money at stake, presumably not a decision to be made lightly or on a whim. On the other hand, on a show with so much drinking and hooking up, which translates to many opportunities for crossing the line, erring on the side of caution was probably the right call. (Not everyone agrees. Apparently some observers think the whole thing was a publicity stunt.)

Anyway, as of yesterday the investigation is compete, there was no finding of misconduct and the show will go on. Good news for all, high fives and hugging all around, right? Well, no, at least not for the self-proclaimed "victim." One might have thought Corinne would be relieved and happy to learn that nothing bad had happened to her, but no, she's still the victim and her attorney issued a statement saying this isn't over:

“It needs to be made crystal clear that production of Bachelor in Paradise was shut down because of multiple complaints received from BIP producers and crew members on the set,” he said in a statement. “It was not shut down due to any complaint filed by Corinne against anyone. It comes as no surprise that Warner Bros., as a result of its own internal investigation, would state that no wrong doing had occurred. Our own investigation will continue based on multiple new witnesses coming forward revealing what they saw and heard.”

Are there really any "new" witnesses that weren't included in the Warner Brothers investigation? It's hard to think so. Although BIP films at a resort as opposed to a brick-and-mortar studio, it's still a set, where the number of people on-set at any given time is presumably tightly controlled. And there is security. As we saw when DeMario returned to the mansion in Episode 2 of The Bach'ette, Paulie and his crew keep a close watch on the proceedings, not just to ensure everyone's safety, but also to ensure that someone with a cell phone camera doesn't sneak onto the set then send spoiler videos out into the world. It should have been very easy for investigators to make a complete list of everyone who could have seen or heard anything; it's hard to believe someone slipped through the cracks and is now speaking only to Corinne's lawyer.

The Warner Brothers statement makes a point of mentioning that an outside law firm was involved, but Corinne's lawyer's statement implies that the studio whitewashed the outcome. Here's what ABC's Legal Editor Dan Abrams said about that on Good Morning, America this morning:

"You've got to believe after they've [Warner Brothers] seen the tape and they have certainly gone through the tape with a fine-tooth comb, for them to come out and publicly say 'We don't believe there's any misconduct and the show's going to go on,' if they've seen that tape, they've reviewed that tape and what they're saying isn't true, and someone sues them later and that comes out, that would be devastating for them... I guarantee you lawyers went through... that public statement."

I'm wondering what Corinne's end goal here is. Continuing to insist she's the victim of a sexual assault, and having previously stated that she was so drunk she can't remember what happened, is just not a good look for her or her brand. It's been clear from her first appearance on Nick's season that her goal is to get famous and make money. It was also clear that she drinks too much and aggressively uses her sexuality in pursuit of her goals. (Remember the "Platinum Vagine?") She sells stuff on Instagram (780,000 followers,) she has a "Team Corn" line of clothing and she's been quoted as saying that she wants to be The Bachelorette or have her own show. Does "I was too drunk to know better" really help her get there? My advice for Corinne? Go. To. Rehab.

A few more thoughts from around Bachelor Nation:

The show will go on. As the scandal played out it appeared as though BIP was dead in the water, not just for this summer but for good. The brand was just too tarnished. Nope. They're getting the band back together and the show will air in August, although possibly not on the originally planned dates. Us magazine online says DeMario has been invited back, no word on Corinne, but my guess would be no.

The wedding went on, too. Carly and Evan's wedding happened as planned on Saturday, with several familiar Bachelor Nation faces in attendance:

The couple was joined by numerous fellow Bachelor Nation alums, including Jade Roper (bridesmaid) and Tanner Tolbert, Wells Adams (groomsman), Whitney Bischoff and her fiancé Ricky Angel, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Shawn Booth, Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi, sisters Emily and Haley Ferguson, Ashley Iaconetti, and Jared Haibon. (Read the article here.) I assume the wedding will be part of what we see when Bachelor In Paradise finally airs this summer.

There are now seven couples who met on one of the Bachelor franchise shows and eventually got married. Can you name them? (Trista & Ryan, Desiree & Chris, Ashley & JP, Sean & Catherine, Jason & Molly, Jade & Tanner, and now Carly & Evan.) In spite of the chaos surrounding BIP, and the general weirdness of the show overall, two out of the seven married couples met and got engaged on BIP. And at least so far, when Bach Nation couples get married they stay married. Not a bad track record.

Finally, yes, there was a new episode of The Bachelorette on Monday, and yes, I was watching, more or less, but I don't have a lot to say about it. Clearly Lee is the new villain, deservedly so, and just as he did with Whaboom, ABC exec Robert Mills reassures Bachelor Nation that Lee's days on the show are numbered:

Did Millsy say "2 part event?" Yes he did. Next week ABC is putting two episodes of The Bach'ette out into the universe, Monday and Tuesday nights. After that there's another two-week gap, with the show taking July 3 off to celebrate the 4th of July. Will there be another juicy Bach scandal to help us pass the time while the show is missing? Probably (and hopefully) not. Meet me back here, whenever, Rosebuds, same Bach time, same Bach channel.

Chip and Joanna Gaines, Again

Issue dated July 3, 2017: Chip & Joanna Gaines

This is the second cover featuring Chip and Joanna in seven months, a story I didn't foresee. When their first cover came out, in an issue dated 10/24/16, and titled "Chip & Joanna Gaines: Family, Faith and Sudden Fame," I titled my People Cover post "Chip & Joanna Gaines (Who?)" and I still feel that way. Are these people really that famous?

Divorcing HGTV stars Tarek & Christina El Moussa have been featured twice recently as well, first as the main cover story on the issue dated December 26, 2016 then again ten weeks later on the March 6, 2017 cover. (See those covers here.) The April 10, 2017 issue featured the Property Brothers. What is it with all these HGTV cover stories? They must sell well or People wouldn't keep running them.

My best guess had been that Beyonce's twins would be the main story this week and they do get a topline tease. So far the Carters haven't issued any kind of official announcement, not even the sex of the babies or their names, and there are no pictures, which is probably why they're not the main story. I've been expecting a few Diana stories as we get closer to the 20th anniversary of her death on August 31; I assume these "secret tapes" are part of an updated edition of Andrew Morton's book " Diana: Her True Story."

Being Mean To Trump

"Compulsions, obsessions and vindictiveness"
"Egotism that borders on solipsism"
"Divided, incompetent and chaotic"
"Constant, childish, refuted, uncorrected lies"
"Pathetic, even frightening ignorance on policy matters foreign and domestic"
"Ethically challenged associates"

Wow, some Democrat is saying really mean things about the president. Oops, no, this is from an editorial by Michael Gerson, a conservative Republican who writes for the Washington Post:

Trump has been ruled by compulsions, obsessions and vindictiveness, expressed nearly daily on Twitter. He has demonstrated an egotism that borders on solipsism. His political skills as president have been close to nonexistent. His White House is divided, incompetent and chaotic, and key administration jobs remain unfilled. His legislative agenda has gone nowhere. He has told constant, childish, refuted, uncorrected lies, and demanded and habituated deception among his underlings. He has humiliated and undercut his staff while requiring and rewarding flattery. He has promoted self-serving conspiracy theories. He has displayed pathetic, even frightening, ignorance on policy matters foreign and domestic. He has inflicted his ethically challenged associates on the nation. He is dead to the poetry of language and to the nobility of the political enterprise, viewing politics as conquest rather than as service.

Trump has made consistent appeals to prejudice based on religion and ethnicity, and associated the Republican Party with bias. He has stoked tribal hostilities. He has carelessly fractured our national unity. He has attempted to undermine respect for any institution that opposes or limits him — be it the responsible press, the courts or the intelligence community. He has invited criminal investigation through his secrecy and carelessness. He has publicly attempted to intimidate law enforcement. He has systematically alarmed our allies and given comfort to authoritarians. He promised to emancipate the world from American moral leadership — and has kept that pledge. (Read the entire article here.)

Royal Ascot

Saturday morning update: Who got to ride with the Queen on Day 4
and Day 5? I don't know, I've never heard of most of these people.

Friday, Day 4:

Thursday morning update: Here's the carriage lineup for day 3:

Wednesday morning update: Okay, I guess I'm a little more interested in Ascot than I thought. Not the horse racing so much as the royal carriages and who's riding in them. The Ascot account on Twitter is very kindly keeping me informed; here's today's lineup:

It's being reported that the Queen's husband, Prince Philip, is hospitalized this morning, resulting in an open seat in the Queen's carriage. Charles and Camilla have been promoted to Carriage #1, which may have been planned all along, accompanied by Lord Fellowes, Diana's brother-in-law, who was in Carriage #4 yesterday with his wife Jane. Will and Kate get the day off and Lord Vestey is bumped to Carriage 4. I have no idea if there's any real significance to any of this, and other than Princess Alexandra, I have no idea who the people in Carriages 3 and 4 are. Who will ride with the Queen tomorrow? As long as Ascot keeps tweeting, I'll keep updating this post.

Original post:
For the most part, Royal Ascot is one of those things I don't care about. I saw a tweet this morning, however, that caught my eye:
The various royals riding in Carriages 1, 2 and 3 are the usual suspects (except for Lord Vestey, I'm not sure who he is,) but Carriage 4 was a bit of a surprise. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips are Princess Anne's son and daughter-in-law, and Lord and Lady Fellowes are Princess Diana's sister and her husband. Interesting. (In an "if you care about such things" kind of way.)

Kaitlyn Wants A Wedding

This is 2015 Bach'ette Kaitlyn's response to Bach guru Mike Fleiss's "So happy for Carly and Evan!!!" tweet. Looks like she really wants ABC to give her a TV wedding. Confession: I wonder why they haven't. There has to be a reason...

A Bachelor In Paradise Wedding

Sunday morning update:

Original post:

Carly and Evan got engaged at the end of last summer's season of Bachelor In Paradise and they were supposed to get married in Mexico today as part of this summer's show. With the entire season now cancelled there was some question as to whether or not the wedding would happen, but based on this tweet from Bach guru Mike Fleiss, it looks like it did.

Will the wedding ever be shown on television? Who knows. ABC certainly has some holes in the schedule with no BIP. Will they fill one or two hours with a show about Carly and Evan? Maybe. In the meantime, Congratulations to the happy couple!

2020...

On August 16, 2013, I posted what I think was my first list of potential Republican candidates for president in 2016. (Read it here.)

Now, 1,234 days before the 2020 election, here are the names included in a Politico story titled "Democratic 2020 contenders? Voters haven't heard of them:"
  1. Former VP Joe Biden
  2. Senator Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts)
  3. Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont, ran in 2016)
  4. Former Governor Martin O'Malley (Maryland, ran in 2016)
  5. Senator Tim Kaine (Virginia, was Hillary's running mate in 2016)
  6. Senator Al Franken (Minnesota)
  7. Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey)
  8. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (New York)
  9. Senator Kamala Harris (California)
  10. Senator Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota)
  11. Senator Chris Murphy (Connecticut)
  12. Governor Andrew Cuomo (New York)
  13. Governor Terry McAuliffe (Virginia)
  14. Governor John Hickenlooper (Colorado)
  15. Governor Jay Inslee (Washington)
  16. Governor Steve Bullock (Montana)
  17. Representative Seth Moulton (Massachusetts)
  18. Former Missouri Sec. of State Jason Kander
  19. Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti
  20. Starbucks Executive Chairman Howard Schultz
  21. Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger
Why so many names? Could it be that these Democrats see an opportunity? Is it possible that our current president may not be perceived as a good bet for relection? Oh you bet. (I think it's at least possible that Trump doesn't serve his full term, which would make Mike Pence the incumbent, and hey, I'm getting ahead of myself. Suffice it to say that many, many Democrats will be taking a serious look at running in 2020.)

Will one of these men or women be standing on the steps of the Capitol on January 20, 2021 to take the oath of office? We'll know in 1,234 days.

The Guessing Game

Tuesday morning, update #3: I just thought of one more possibility. Miss North West's 4th birthday, which happened last week. People is usually pretty restrained about featuring the ongoing drama of Kardashianland, but a cute picture of North might rate a small sidebar headline.

Sunday afternoon, update #2:
Carla Bruni: A new album, says she never dated Donald Trump
Seven sailors: Died when a merchant vessel crashed into the USS Fitzgerald
Philando Castile: The man who shot him was acquitted
Stephen Furst: Played "Flounder" in Animal House, dead at 63

Sunday morning, update #1:
Beyonce and Jay Z: She gives birth to twins
Carly and Evan: Got engaged on Bachelor in Paradise last summer, got married yesterday in Mexico. A bright note in the middle of the BIP scandal/shut down.

Original post:
What will be on the cover of People magazine this week? My guesses:

Another Mass Shooting: Gunman shoots 4 people at a Congressional baseball game practice
Bill Cosby: His trial ends in a mistrial
Carrie Fisher: Information about what caused her death is released
The Murder By Texting Case: A guilty verdict
Kevin Durant: NBA Finals MVP (and ex-boyfriend of Bachelorette Rachel)
Naomi Watts: Her new (very strange) movie gets scathing reviews
Tom Cruise: His new movie, The Mummy, is also excoriated by critics
Otto Warmbier: The young man held by North Korea is released, currently in a possibly-irreversible coma (Politically incorrect comment from me: Would it really be so terrible if we bombed North Korea back to the stone age? What a wretchedly awful place.)
Nikos Giannopoulos: The Rhode Island Teacher of the Year trolled POTUS with LGBTQ accessories during an Oval office photo op:

True Crime

Issue dated June 26, 2017: Michelle Carter

People goes with a True Crime cover this week, about the teen-age girl on trial for allegedly causing her boyfriend to commit suicide. I've seen the headlines but haven't read much about it. Two out of the four sidebar/topline stories were on my Guessing Game list, the Clooney twins and the Bachelor in Paradise scandal.

Wednesday morning update: It looks like perhaps Peter isn't there for the right reasons either. TMZ dug up his yearbook photo:

The Guessing Game

Tuesday morning update:
Meghan Kelly: She was on the list a couple of weeks ago when she interviewed Vladimir Putin, now she's in hot water for her interview with Alex Jones.

Original post:
Will the Bachelor In Paradise incident be on the cover of People this week? Maybe. It's currently the lead story at people.com and information has been coming out all morning. My understanding is that the magazine is finalized Monday night, so if reporters and editors are scrambling today the story could make it into the new issue. Other guesses:

George and Amal Clooney: The twins have arrived
Elizabeth Gilbert: A commitment ceremony with her partner who is terminally ill
Ryan Lochte: He's a dad too
Adam West: Dead Celebrity, the original Batman dies
Prince Philip: Turned 96 on Saturday
Jessica Chastain: A wedding in Italy
Melania and Barron Trump: They've moved into the White House, although in this picture neither one of them looks too thrilled to be there. (And on a side note, Wednesday is the Donald's 71st birthday.)

Trouble In Paradise

Monday morning, update #2: More information trickled out overnight. From people.com:

PEOPLE has learned that a producer allegedly witnessed a drunken sexual encounter between two cast members. It is not clear if charges have been brought against the cast member involved. Warner Bros. has not commented on the specific allegations brought against the cast member.

“It’s an incredibly difficult and complicated situation, primarily involving two contestants,” the source close to the show told PEOPLE “The show absolutely values the primacy of consent, and this instance it appears as though conduct allegedly occurred without the proper consent having been given. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, and a lot of people who need a chance to tell their stories fully, and the producers and the authorities will make sure they are given every opportunity to do so. Most of all, everyone wants to ensure the safety and well-being, both mentally and physically, of all parties involved.”

A source added the the show will likely not continue filming, but that has not yet been confirmed by Warner Bros.

And from TMZ (with apologies for the language):

Here's DeMario's version of events, as told by people with whom he spoke:

Last Sunday -- the first day of production at a Mexican resort -- DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios were told by producers one of the story lines would be the 2 of them hooking up ... especially entertaining because both are considered villains from previous shows.

We're told the 2 met at the bar and the alcohol was flowing. DeMario says Corinne jumped in his lap and started making out with him. We're told there was lots of "intense rubbing."

DeMario says Corinne then suggested they retreat to the pool, with the cameras rolling. They took off their clothes, started making out and "rubbing, touching and fingering." He says she put her genitals in his face and he began licking, but we're told this allegation is a big point of contention and others disagree with his account. He says he was not able to engage in intercourse because of the alcohol.

DeMario says the next day everything was fine and he and Corrine were actually getting along well, but on Tuesday they were called in by the Executive Producer and told one of the show producers had seen the film and was "uncomfortable" with what was shot.

The producer has filed a formal complaint with Warner Bros. Warner brass immediately suspended production, launched an investigation and released DeMario and Corrine. Two days later Warner Bros. released the entire cast while they investigated alleged "misconduct."

As we said, there are other versions of what happened that differ from DeMario's.

The most interesting phrase in the TMZ account? Demario and Corinne were "told by producers one of the story lines would be the 2 of them hooking up..." Just a reminder that almost nothing on these shows happens organically. It's almost all orchestrated by producers. The question becomes, How much is too much? How far is too far? Wherever that line is, apparently Demario and Corinne crossed it, with the assistance of too much alcohol. This is turning into an ugly story all around.

Update #1: Corinne was the "villain" on Nick's season; Demario was given a villain edit on his (very short) tenure on Rachel's season. Are the two of them really responsible for shutting down production on Bachelor In Paradise? As I said below, I'm very curious to know what happened.

Original post:

Apparently something bad happened on the set of Bachelor In Paradise. Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ are all reporting that production has been suspended due to "allegations of misconduct." I first read about it at people.com:

The Bachelor/ette franchise spinoff Bachelor in Paradise, which is currently filming its fourth season in Mexico, has stopped production due to what the production company is calling a “misconduct.”

“We have become aware of allegations of misconduct on the set of Bachelor in Paradise in Mexico,” Warner Bros. said in a statement. “We have suspended production and we are conducting a thorough investigation of these allegations. Once the investigation is complete, we will take appropriate responsive action.”

Reality Steve is also on it:

It's easy to snark about this. If The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are silly shows, Bachelor In Paradise is sillier, which makes it easy to forget that the whole franchise is big business, both for the production company and ABC. Bachelor In Paradise is a key element of ABC's summer schedule and if the show is really cancelled that's a big, big deal. There's now a hole in the schedule that will have to be filled, not to mention another black eye on the franchise. We're only three episodes into Rachel's season, and from a business perspective, as well as a creative/entertainment perspective, this is so not what anyone wanted to happen. I admit I'm curious to learn more.

Astronauts!

A few weeks ago I wrote about my "retro-astro space race place," after revisiting the 60s and 70s via Hidden Figures, Apollo 13 and The Astronaut Wives Club. (Read it here.) At the time I had the idea in my head that the U.S. was mostly out of the astronaut business, but that's not true. Yesterday NASA introduced 12 new American astronauts who will train for two years to do cool stuff like launching on spacecraft built by commercial companies and departing for deep space missions (and hopefully coming back.) Here's NASA's Instagram announcement:
People of Earth…we happily introduce you to America’s #NewAstronauts! These 12 humans were selected from more than 18,300 applicants, which is more than double the previous record of 8,000 set in 1978. These astronaut candidates will return to Johnson Space Center in August to begin two years fo training. Then they could be assigned to any of a variety of missions, including: performing research on the International Space Station, launching from American soil on spacecraft built by commercial companies, and departing for deep space missions in our Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket.  Applicants included U.S. citizens in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories Puerto Rico, Guam and America Samoa. The talented women and men selected for the new astronaut class represent the diversity of America and the career paths that can lead to a place in America’s astronaut corps.  Credit: NASA  #nasa #NewAstronauts #astronauts #space #humanspaceflight #exploration #classof2017 #2017 #astronautcandidates #training #announcement #picoftheday #spacecraft

Ivanka, But Not Really

Wednesday afternoon update: some interesting information about Us magazine:

Original post:
Issue dated June 19, 2017

People magazine is sticking with its "No Trumps on the cover" policy, at least for right now, but Us magazine goes for it, putting Ivanka front and center on the cover of their new issue. Just like Jennifer Garner last week, however, Ivanka may not be thrilled. The article at usmagazine.com, (read it here) quotes a "source close to Ivanka," "another Ivanka insider" and an "Ivanka friend," as well as previous interviews with Harper's Bazaar, Gayle King and the New York Times, but clearly Us did not speak to Ivanka directly.

Our Bach'ette Rachel gets a topline tease about her "Secret Dating History," which I assume refers to reports that she dated Kevin Durant in college.

Olivia Newton-John

Issue dated June 19, 2017: Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton-John's cancer diagnosis, which I had heard about but for some reason never put on a guessing game post, is the main story this week. I did better with the sidebar stories, including Mary Kay Letourneau (this week,) Ariana Grande (last week) and Ben & Lauren's break-up (three weeks ago.) I'm surprised there's nothing about Tiger Woods. George Clooney's wife gave birth to twins yesterday, which is currently my best guess for next week's main story.

I actually have a small, six-degrees-of-separation connection to Olivia Newton-John. Her first husband, Matt Lattanzi, is from Portland, Oregon and one of my cousins knew him from dancing classes back in the day. It was a big, big deal when Matt married Olivia in 1984.

On this day 73 years ago, the Allied Expeditionary Forces, under the overall command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, descended on the shores of Normandy, France, and helped pave the way for the end of World War II. (From the Washington Post, read it here.)

If you're interested in President Eisenhower, and I admit I am, I recommend Ike, An American Hero, by Michael Korda.
