Update on Aug. 5: Did criticizing Donald Trump hurt Rick Perry with voters? (Or, specifically, with those voters who answer pollsters' questions.) Possibly. When I wrote the post below, on July 25, Perry was polling in the top 10 nationally and looked like a good bet to be on the debate stage tomorrow night. Alas, however, he missed the cut, barely, coming in at #11. Was it his diss of The Donald? Maybe, or maybe he's still paying the price for his big "oops" moment in 2011. Regardless, he's out of the debate, and possibly sooner rather than later, out of the race for the Republican nomination. Watch the oops moment here.
Original Post:
If you don't think Donald Trump has sucked all the media oxygen out of the Republican primary race, consider this bit of wisdom, which crawled across the bottom of my television screen as I was watching CNN this afternoon:
"One of Donald Trump's harshest critics talks to State of the Union - Rick Perry."
Got that? Without Trump, Rick Perry might have been described as the former governor of Texas, which he is; a candidate for the Republication nomination for president, which he also is; or even as one of the top 10 candidates who will be invited to participate in the first debate on August 6, which he currently is. (If I was in the mood to be mean I could point out that Perry is the dope who couldn't remember the third of three government agencies he would abolish if he had been elected president in 2012, when he was also a candidate.)
Nope. As of right now, he's just one of the Donald's biggest critics.
