What will be on the cover of People this week? My guesses:
Timothy Cunningham: The missing CDC researcher was found dead in a river
Kate Hudson and/or Cardi B: Pregnant
Prince Albert of Monaco: A new biography was just published
Carrie Underwood: Out in public after the accident that injured her face
Eric and Lyle Mendenez: Reunited in the same prison after more than
20 years
Mark Zuckerberg: Testifying before Congress this week
Celebrity Splits: Miranda Lambert, Brooke Burke, Jennie Garth and Property Brother Jonathan Scott have all split from their partners
Lin-Manuel Miranda: Shared that he's got a case of Shingles
Jimmy Kimmel: Feuding with Sean Hannity
The royals: Harry and Meghan's wedding is six weeks away, Kate will give birth in the next couple of weeks, the Queen turns 92 on April 21, Prince Philip had hip replacement surgery at age 96, Charles & Camilla and Will & Kate have wedding anniversaries this month (13 years for C & C, 7 for W & K.) Lots going on for the Windsors right now
Next week should be the "Most Beautiful" issue, unless People comes to its senses and stops objectifying women for their looks. That's not going to happen, so who will get the title of Most Beautiful this year? I have no idea. The choice doesn't happen in a vacuum, it's almost always someone who is promoting something or other. (Last year's choice of Julia Roberts was a commercial promotion for Lancome, I wrote about it here.) Right now I'm drawing a complete blank on who editors might select this year. If inspiration strikes I'll update this post or include it in next week's Guessing Game post; in the meantime, here's the complete list of previous Most Beautiful "winners:"
1990 Michelle Pfeiffer
1991 Julia Roberts
1992 Jodie Foster
1993 Cindy Crawfod
1994 Meg Ryan
1995 Courtney Cox
1996 Mel Gibson
1997 Tom Cruise
1998 Leonaro DiCaprio
1999 Michelle Pfeiffer
2000 Julia Roberts
2001 Catherine Zeta-Jones
2002 Nicole Kidman
2003 Halle Berry
2004 Jennifer Aniston
2005 Julia Roberts
2006 Angelina Jolie
2007 Drew Barrymore
2008 Kate Hudson
2009 Christina Applegate
2010 Julia Roberts
2011 Jennifer Lopez
2012 Beyonce
2013 Gwyneth Paltrow
2014 Lupita Nyong'o
2015 Sandra Bullock
2016 Jennifer Aniston
2017 Julia Roberts
2018 ???
From last year's Guessing Game post:
To do a little demographic sorting, three men (Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio) have gotten the cover gig, and Gibson and Cruise have also been called the Sexiest Man Alive. Cindy Crawford was on a "Sexiest Couple" cover with her first husband, Richard Gere. Julia Roberts has three "Beautiful" covers and Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Aniston have two. Three of the women have been married or engaged to Brad Pitt (Paltrow, Aniston and Jolie.) Three of the women (Halle Berry, Beyonce and Lupita Nyong'o) are black, and one, Jodie Foster, is gay. (Read the entire post here.)
Note: Julia Roberts actually had four previous cover stories when this post was written, I wrote about the confusion here.
Sunday afternoon update:
Jason Miller and/or A.J. Delgado: The Trump campaign staffers who had an affair and a baby are back in the news. I wrote about the story last August, read it here; Talking Points Memo has a new interview with Delgado, read it here.
Monday morning, update #2:
Tony Robbins: The self-help guru, who I find to be extremely annoying, is in the news after his offensive comments about the #MeToo movement. Read about it here.
Kate Gosselin: Will star in a new reality show
Kenya Moore: Who? She's one of the "Real Housewives of Atlanta," a show I so don't watch. Apparently she's pregnant at age 47, which is currently the lead story at people.com
Monday evening, update #3:
Tim Tebow: The former NFL quarterback is now playing AA baseball, and has a new book coming out in September. Last night people.com posted a new interview with him that could be a teaser for a cover story. (Read it here.)
Rudy Giuliani: Getting his third divorce. Last time around, in the issue dated May 28, 2001 (below,) Rudy's second divorce scored him the main cover story, and yes, there's a Trump reference in the form of a quote from Ivana ("a veteran, if there ever was one, of the dirty New York City divorce,") dispensing advice to Guiliani's second wife, Donna Hanover:
In
the meantime, the besieged Hanover might be wise to heed the advice of one who
has been there before. “Keep your head high,” says Ivana Trump, a veteran, if
ever there was one, of the dirty New York City divorce. “Let the son of a gun
go, and say, ‘I’m going to live my life.’ ”
Read the story here.
Wednesday morning update: Except for Kate Gosselin I completely struck out this week. See the new issue, with a cover story featuring Mariah Carey, here.
