Kate And Meghan

Friday morning, update #2: There was a third "Diana and Sarah" cover, which I had forgotten about:
Image result for People cover March 17 1997

This issue, dated March 17, 1997, was published after both royal marriages had imploded and both women were divorced. Diana would die in the car accident just five and 1/2 months later. I remember thinking at the time that the headline was a bit of a low blow against Sarah Ferguson and I still think so. As I've said here in the blog before, Fergie made some dumb mistakes but she was also thrown under the bus several times by various members of the royal family, including, according to Tina Brown in The Diana Chronicles, by Diana herself.

It turns out that Diana wasn't much of a friend to Sarah after all. Brown takes us back to 1992. Andrew Morton's bombshell book about Diana, titled Diana, Her True Story, was about to be published. There was another book in the works, however, by someone called "Lady Colin Campbell," that told some pretty unflattering tales about Diana. Here's what happened next:

Diana was thrown into a panic when she learned that Lady Colin Campbell’s tell-all book, Diana in Private, was due to come out shortly before Morton’s and might steal her thunder. At just the right moment, however, a story came along that blew the rival book off the front pages. On March 18, Morton and Richard Kay broke the news of the separation of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson as an exclusive in the Daily Mail. The story was ruinous for Fergie’s relations with the Palace. The Queen was personally infuriated by the leak, which later did not help Fergie’s financial negotiations. The Grey Men of the Palace were convinced the Duchess had handed out the information herself, accusing her of hiring a PR company to give it to the Mail.

Pretty bad for Fergie, right? So what really happened? A few paragraphs later, Brown tells us that [a]fter Diana’s death, Morton finally revealed that it was indeed the Princess of Wales who had served up her erstwhile best friend to provide the necessary press distraction. (From The Diana Chronicles, Anchor Books Mass Market edition, May 2008, pages 390-391)

"The merry wives of Windsor"? Not really.

Thursday morning update: I'm not the only one who sees parallels between Kate & Meghan and Fergie & Di. From a new story at people.com:

With Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton set to become sisters-in-law in just a matter of months, their newfound friendship evokes memories of another iconic pair of royal pals: Princess Diana and Sarah, Duchess of York (also known as Fergie).

Of course, there are notable differences between Kate and Meghan and Sarah and Diana. Kate and Meghan —both age 36 — are a decade older than Diana and Fergie were at the start of their marriages. And former Suits star Meghan she has had a far more established career than the three other women had before their own royal marriages. But not since Diana and Fergie have two sisters-in-law in the British royal family so captured the public imagination.

Sarah and Prince Andrew knew each other throughout their childhoods, but were reintroduced by Diana and Prince Charles. They wed in 1986, five years after Diana and Charles’s wedding. Less than two years apart in age, Diana and Sarah became fast friends. (Read the article here.)

Also included is this infamous photo, which was an example of the follies of Fergie and Di:

Note that I wrote the post below yesterday; this new story posted online this morning. In other words, your blogger got there first.

Original post:
Issue dated February 12, 2018: Kate and Meghan

Another in what I'm sure will be an on-going series of cover stories about Meghan and her upcoming royal wedding. Based on the article currently posted on people.com (read it here) People is stretching the "best friends" narrative a little. There are a couple of quotes from "sources" that point out that both women are now 36 and both live at Kensington Palace. There's also a reprint of that nice picture of the two couples at church on Christmas Day, also printed on the new cover. It's pretty weak tea. It would be lovely if the two royal wives could become good friends, but there's no real evidence that it's happened yet.

On the other hand, there's a deja vu aura to the story. Back in the 80s, People ran not one but two cover stories about a previous generation's royal wives, Diana, the Princess of Wales and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. In the issue dated October 13, 1986, just weeks after Sarah's wedding to Prince Andrew, the headline was "The Merry Wives of Windsor":

Image result for People cover October 13, 1986 Diana and Fergie

Less than a year later, the issue dated July 20, 1987 had one of my favorite headlines of all times: "Naughty, Naughty, The follies of Fergie and Di." Wow.

Image result for People cover July 20, 1989 Follies of Fergie and Di

The follies of Fergie and Di didn't work out so well, of course, but there's every reason to think things will go better this time around. At the time of these cover stories, Diana and Sarah were both still in their mid-20s. At 36, Kate and Meghan are the same as Diana was when she died. The royal family has worked hard to learn from the tragic mistakes of the past, and both William and Harry have been allowed to choose partners they actually love, even though neither woman would have been considered an appropriate royal wife just one generation ago. What will be the topic of the next royal cover? Meghan's wedding dress? Her unconventional family members? Harry's good friends the Obamas, and whether or not they're invited to the big day? Stay tuned.

Still no sign of Melania.

They Really Are Incompetent

Marco is showing us a close-up of an official ticket to the State of the Union speech. In the interest of fairness, I'll include the following, from Politico:

The Trump White House, which has had its share of spelling and grammatical errors in press releases and administration announcements, isn’t to blame in this case. The sergeant-at-arms is responsible for printing the tickets, according to another source who confirmed the authenticity of the tickets.

Okay, this one isn't the White House's fault, but it sure fits into the "they're sloppy, they're unprofessional and they really don't care about proofreading" narrative, and I reserve the right to experience a little snarky blogger schadenfreude. See examples of dumb White House typos here, here and here.

In other SOTU news, the White House says Melania will be in attendance.

The Guessing Game

What will be on the cover of People this week? My guesses:

Rosemarie Acquilina: The judge in the Larry Nassar gymnastics abuse case. Bad-ass and take no prisoners, she's one tough dame, and I mean that in a good way
Elton John and/or Neil Diamond: Both senior citizen rock stars have announced that they're retiring
The Grammys: The ceremony is tonight, People sometimes does cover stories about award show fashion
The Oscars: Nominations were announced last week
2018 Winter Olympics: The PyeongChang games, the first of three in a row in Asia, kick off in 11 days. So far things appear to be going much better than four years ago in, where?? Oh yeah, Sochi, Russia
Scott Baio: Accused of assault by Charles In Charge co-star Nicole Eggert
Melania: Her "situation" is getting some mainstream coverage, including articles at the Boston Globe ("The Unbearable Awkwardness Of Being Melania") and the New York Times ("The Quiet Radicalism of Melania Trump.") The Daily Mail reports that she only stayed in Palm Beach for 28 hours before returning to the White House Friday afternoon. (Read it here.) Is this the week People features the First Lady on the cover? We'll see

The President And The Porn Star

The Trump presidency gives snarky bloggers a lot to work with and political cartoonists are having fun too. I'm posting this one with a serious comment, however. It amazes me that conservative Christians, including Franklin Graham, Tony Perkins and VPOTUS Mike Pence, continue to support the wretched man who is currently our president. The mental gymnastics involved are just baffling.

True Crime: The Turpin Family

Issue dated February 5, 2018: The Turpin Family

No surprise here, the Turpin family story gets the full True Crime treatment, along with a sidebar headline about Princess Eugenie's engagement. The "Jackie and Lee" headline is tied to a new book by Randy Taraborrelli called Jackie, Janet and Lee. It comes out January 30.

Happy Anniversary?

As far as I know, there are no presidential couples celebrating anniversaries today. There was one yesterday. Donald and Melania tied the knot on January 22, 2005, making yesterday their 13th anniversary. (Not) surprisingly, neither POTUS nor the First Lady felt compelled to tweet/Instagram about it.

The Guessing Game

What will be on the cover of People this week? Just a few guesses:

House of Horrors: The family in California that kept 13 children chained up
McKayla Maroney: Olympic gymnast defies an NDA to testify against Dr. Larry Nassar
Princess Eugenie: The younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Fergie just got engaged
Kardashians: Kim's baby was born via surrogate, two other sisters are expecting
Melania Trump: She's been the First Lady for a year, now she's the cuckolded wife whose husband had an affair with a porn star. I keep putting Melania on the Guessing Game list; so far People is ignoring her but I expect we'll see her on the cover eventually

Hard At Work?

Some meanies on Twitter don't think POTUS is really working in this picture; to prove their point, Honor Sachs dug up some pictures of previous presidents:

The Cheater-In-Chief

The updates keep coming: Friday morning, update #4: After her visit to the Museum Thursday, Melania took leave of the White House for a surprise, unplanned (or at least, not previously announced) trip to Palm Beach, Florida. (No scheduling and logistical issues with that, apparently.) You can read CNN's report here; POTUS comes home tonight, will he join his wife in Florida?

Thursday afternoon, update #3: I was wrong below, when I said we wouldn't see Melania in public until the 4th of July. She visited the Holocaust Museum today. (I will note that her husband is conveniently out of the country.) Her next big First Lady gig is the State Of The Union speech Tuesday night. Will the FLOTUS be sitting in the usual First Lady seat, sincerely cheering for her husband? We'll see.

Tuesday morning, update #2: CNN is reporting that Melania is no longer planning to accompany the president to Davos:

First lady Melania Trump, in a change of plans, will not be joining President Donald Trump on his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later this week.
East Wing communications director Stephanie Grisham confirmed to CNN that the first lady's decision to forgo the trip was based on "scheduling and logistical issues."

A week ago, Grisham told CNN the first lady would be attending the annual meeting of influential financial leaders and business titans in a show of support for her husband, who intends to give remarks during his visit.

I bet we don't see her in public before the 4th of July, if then.

Sunday night update #1: The party went on, apparently, with the president's two large adult sons standing in for him. Even at $100,000 per couple, however, the caviar was served with plastic spoons. That's just tacky.

If any other president had had sex with a porn star then paid money to keep her quiet, it would be the scandal of the century. With Trump, apparently it's just baked in, not unexpected and no big deal.

As I've said before, there's no way to know how Melania feels about all this, but I'm guessing she's relieved that she didn't have to appear in public and pretend to be delighted to be standing next to the cheater-in-chief this week-end. (They were supposed to go to Mar-A-Lago and attend a big fundraiser last night. The government shutdown kept them in Washington.) It's one thing to sell your soul (and of course, your body) to a degenerate pig in exchange for the luxurious (private) life of a rich man's wife. It's another thing to have to play that role in the glare of the spotlight that comes with being the president's wife. As I said, I'm just guessing...

1974: We Can Rebuild Him, We Have The Technology...

One of the best title sequences ever.

Stormy, Indeed

In Touch Weekly Stormy Daniels Cover

There's no mention of Stormy on the cover of the new issue of People but In Touch goes for it, with details from an interview Ms. Daniels apparently gave back in 2011. (Read the online article here.)

And I love this tweet from Ana Navarro:

"Michelle would have killed him." No kidding. Strong, smart, no nonsense, no prisoners, a fully equal partner in the marriage, expecting/insisting on integrity, loyalty and respect. That's Michelle all right. Can we say the same about Melania? It doesn't look that way from the outside but who knows what really goes on between Donald and Melania. I read recently that they dated for 6-7 years before they got married, so Melania knew what she was getting. That tells me that if she was of a mind to (figuratively) kill The Donald for infidelity it would have happened long before now. (And I assume if he had been a middle-class accountant from Queens, she would never have married him.)

What's it like to be Melania Trump these days? In a previous post I said that being married to Donald would be wretched soul-destroying indentured servitude and I still think so. Living at the White House, meeting foreign leaders and flying around on Air Force One doesn't change anything.

Ann Curry

Issue dated January 29, 2018: Ann Curry

People posts the new cover early, with only one Guessing Game item (Wahlberg/Williams) featured. Currently my best guess for *next* week is the family that kept 13 children chained inside the house.

The Guessing Game

Tuesday afternoon update: Kim Kardashian's 3rd baby was born via surrogate. According to People.com, the baby arrived at 12.47 a.m. Monday, but the announcement just came late this morning, which is probably too late for this week's issue. If so, "hold that thought" for next week.

Original post:
What will be on the cover of People this week? Just a few guesses:

Stormy Daniels: Porn star was paid money to stay silent about an affair with Donald Trump
Mark Wahlberg and/or Michelle Williams: After an uproar about their respective salaries, Wahlberg donates $1.5 million to the #Time'sUP movement in Williams' name
Eric Clapton: Announces that he's going deaf
Eric Greitens: Conservative family values governor of Missouri, embroiled in a sex scandal
Delores O'Riordan: Lead singer of The Cranberries dies at age 46
Tenley Molzhan: Former Bachelor, Bachelor Pad and Bachelor In Paradise star is engaged
Aziz Ansari: Accused of sexual misconduct

A Great Story

Excellent Health?

I like this tweet from David Axelrod. I also agree with the skeptics who think it's unlikely Dr. Jackson actually wrote and signed off on the statement released in his name by the White House last night:

Why the skepticism?

First, the typically over-the-top Trumponian tone. Second, several medical professionals have pointed out that when they issue this kind of statement, they don't sign themselves "Dr. John Smith." It's much more common to sign as "John Smith, M.D." (Putting Doctor or Dr. in front of your name could mean that you're anything from a psychiatrist to a dentist to a professor of obscure 17th century English poetry. "M.D." clarifies that you're a "medical" doctor.) Finally, Dr. Jackson appears to be a pretty accomplished guy. (Read about him here.) Would he really misspell his own name? (It's "Ronny.")

Due to privacy laws, Trump has the final say over how much of his medical information will be released publicly. My guess is that whatever comes out Tuesday will be bland and generic, with little to no useful information about the real state of the obese 71-year-old president's health.
