Issue dated December 30, 2019: William and Kate
For the second year in a row, People closes out the year with a royal cover. Will and Kate look great but I think the headline is a bit misleading. Yes, barring some kind of disaster, William and Kate will eventually be the king and queen, but no one knows when that day will be and it's probably a long way off. The headline makes it sound as if it's happening next week. In reality, if Prince Charles, who's 71, lives as long as his mother, who's 93 and appears to be going strong, Will and Kate have more than 20 years to wait. If Charles lives as long as his grandmother, the Queen Mother, William won't become king until 2049. Yikes.
And one more thing. Will the Queen step down? Almost certainly not. She will probably continue to reduce her workload, turning more and more of her ceremonial duties over to Charles, William and Harry, and their wives, but an actual abdication/retirement? No. As I've said before, no one is going to take Charles seriously as King as long as his mother is alive.
Last year it was Kate and Meghan:
