It's been 25 years since My So-Called Life debuted on ABC, and CNN says it "still may be the best teen drama ever." In the 1994 Fall Preview Issue, TV Guide called the show one of the best of the new season, saying "The show has just enough of a dark, gritty edge to be convincingly realistic. There's no shortage of angst, but it doesn't have that grating thirtysomething whine. And it could go over with junior-high and high-school kids." In addition to My So-Called Life, Touched By An Angel, Friends and ER all made their debuts in the Fall of 1994. And do you remember a show called On Our Own? It was Jussie Smollett's big break, in which he and his five siblings played a family trying to stay together after they're orphaned. TV Guide said "The Smollett kids, who have been compared to the young Jacksons, are about as cute as they come," but "We're not talking about high-voltage scripts or cutting edge comedy--the show rides almost entirely on the appeal of the kids." The show only lasted one season.
There were also two significant political deaths that happened on this day in history. On August 25, 2009, Senator Ted Kennedy died of a brain tumor; nine years later, on August 25, 2018, Senator John McCain died of the same disease.
