This Day In History, 1974: Nixon Resigns, Gerald Ford Becomes President

Forty five years ago on Aug. 9, 1974, Gerald R. Ford became president, replacing Richard Nixon who resigned in disgrace. Moments after assuming office Ford declared, "Our long national nightmare is over." A decent and caring man had come to power, and a nation breathed a sigh of relief. His ascension to the highest office in the land changed my life also after he appointed me to be his chief White House photographer. During the course of his presidency I had the privilege to document one of the finest people ever to hold that office. We need another one like him. #history #thepresidency #hero
