Baku, Azerbaijan 2005. Reporter Jeff Zeleny and I had accompanied Senators Richard Lugar and Barack Obama on a Congressional delegation trip to Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan (I spelled it correctly twice already!)⁣ ⁣ It was Lugar’s annual trip to inspect the dismantling of weapons—nuclear, biological and conventional—at sites across the former Soviet Union. ⁣And he had brought along the new Senator from Illinois. ⁣ In Azerbaijan, they also met with Peace Corps volunteers and then held this press conference. ⁣ ⁣ Already, I was making photographs with the thought that someday Senator Obama might become President Obama. I thought this scene—with all the media microphones thrust in front of Sen. Lugar and only one in front of Sen. Obama—might be kind of amusing in retrospect. ⁣
