Issue dated July 17, 2017: Maria Menounos
People published the new cover early, due to the holiday, and frankly, it's pretty boring. A "Brain Tumor Battle" sounds dramatic but according to the online story, Menounos' tumor was benign and Maria should be back to normal very soon. Tom Holland (who?) as Spiderman. Rihanna has a rich boyfriend. Did a movie inspire parents to kill their son? Meh to all.
I'm more interested in the Joe and Mika headline, which mentions "Trump." I just did a quick scroll through all the "People Cover" posts since the election, and unless I missed a tiny little headline somewhere, this is the first time the word "Trump" has appeared on the cover of People since the traditional "we have a new president" cover immediately after the election:
Issue dated November 21, 2016
At the time, I figured that Trump's family members, in particular the female ones, current and former, being both photographically attractive and hilariously dysfunctional, would become regular features on People's cover, but so far, nothing. (Even the announcement that Eric Trump's wife is expecting their first child was ignored, and People usually can't stay away from a "baby bump" story.) I've pondered before here on the blog if People has some kind of (probably unwritten) "no Trumps on the cover" policy and I'm beginning to think maybe I'm right.
