It's Khloé

Mid-morning update: Apparently Khloé is taking some heat for her People cover story. Her tweets provide some good "inside baseball" about how things really get done. She's not happy about the pushback but overall this is good for book sales, and for rating for KUWTK Season 11, which starts November 15.

Khloé Kardashian Opens Up About Lamar Odom's Harrowing Ordeal: I'll Always Be There for Him| Breakups, Couples, Health, TV News, Khloe Kardashian, Lamar Odom

Kholé gets the big cover story this week, at least partly tied to her "revealing new book." Remember that Khloé was at a "photo shoot for People" when she got word of Lamar's collapse at the brothel two weeks ago and my bet is that like Drew Barrymore last week, this cover was planned in advance as part of a media blitz to sell books.

Did People luck out with the timing of the Lamar Odom story? ("The reality star spoke to People about her new life - just hours before Lamar Odom was found unconscious. Now Khloé opens up about her bedside vigil and what's next.") Oh, you bet. Did Khloé luck out with the timing of her book release? Oh, you bet. If all this makes you want to rush out and buy the book, it comes out officially on November 3; you can pre-order it at Amazon for $17.88

If You're Not Nice To Me, I'm Going Home

Who said it?

"If this election is about how we’re going to fight to get nothing done, then I don’t want anything -- I don’t want any part of it. I don’t want to be elected president to sit around and see gridlock just become so dominant that people literally are in decline in their lives. That is not my motivation. I’ve got a lot of really cool things I could do other than sit around, being miserable, listening to people demonize me and feeling compelled to demonize them. That is a joke. Elect Trump if you want that."

John Ellis Bush, also known as Jeb!, in South Carolina on Sunday, when asked if his campaign is beginning to "run out of steam." If that doesn't sound particularly presidential, how about this, also from Jeb!:

"Blah, blah, blah, blah, that's my answer, blah, blah, blah."

Drew Barrymore: 'I Had the Weirdest Life Ever'

Here's last week's cover, with Drew Barrymore as the main story. Yes, I'm surprised, because after all the salacious coverage of the drug overdose/sex pills/brothel visit/2 prostitutes/we're staying married etc., I figured Lamar would be front and center. It's certainly been the biggest story at people.com for the last two weeks. Why does Drew Barrymore get the main story, with Khloé and Lamar bumped to a sidebar? She has a book coming out, titled Wildfire, and I'm assuming a People cover package was an agreed-to-in-advance part of her media tour/publicity campaign. She's also on the cover of the November issue of In Style.

And here's the actual book:

Bye, Jim! Bye, Joe! Bye, Linc!

The Republicans get most of the attention because they're more entertaining, but there are a few Democrats running for president too. This week, that list got cut in half. The last time I published the list of Democratic candidates, on July 5, it looked like this, with Vice President Biden waiting in the wings but not yet declared:

Declared Democratic Candidates
  1. Hillary Clinton (April 12)
  2. Bernie Sanders (May 26)
  3. Martin O'Malley (May 30)
  4. Lincoln Chafee (June 3)
  5. Jim Webb (July 2)
On Wednesday, Jim Webb looked reality square in the face and dropped out; later the same day Joe Biden announced that he would not be dropping in. And now this morning, (former Rhode Island governor) Lincoln Chaffee, who according to Salon.com was averaging precisely 0.0% in Real Clear Politic's average of national polls, also dropped out. As Salon put it: "Congratulations, Martin O'Malley. You're in third place!"

I've updated my list:

Declared Democratic Candidates
  1. Hillary Clinton (April 12)
  2. Bernie Sanders (May 26)
  3. Martin O'Malley (May 30)
The Republican list is unchanged since Scott Walker dropped out on September 21; their next debate is Wednesday, Oct. 28. According to the Washington Post, this is how the candidates will be lined up on the CNBC stage, with 10 candidates in the main debate and 4 at the earlier, so-called "undercard" debate:
:

Any guesses for who will be the next Republican to drop out?

Carrie Underwood

Issue dated October 26, 2015

I realized I never posted last week's cover, featuring Carrie Underwood, another Attractive Blonde Woman With A Child.

Will Lamar Odom's story be front and center on the cover that comes out tomorrow? Almost certainly. Will People be able to resist another Duggar story, tied to the new show featuring two of the daughters? I fervently hope so.

In The 2000s, And It Was Horrible

How important is it for a president to be articulate? To know what he or she is talking about? To be able to express his or her thoughts in a coherent way? Jeb! keeps giving us reasons to ponder those questions. In his defense, his brother wasn't the most articulate guy either and he managed to get elected twice, so maybe Jeb! figures it's not that important. The difference is that 43 ran and was elected in the days before cell phone videos, YouTube and Twitter. In those olden days candidates could say something less than brilliant and it might be shown on the evening news or the Sunday talk shows, but it wouldn't go live on YouTube for the whole world to watch, think and blog about.

Jeb! doesn't have that luxury. Once again he's put his (silver) foot in his mouth and it's right there on YouTube:

Presidential? You decide.

Lamar Odom

One more update on Friday night: It turns out I was right with my update below. One of the entertainment shows had a segment tonight with a reporter interviewing a woman who's the manager of the Love Ranch. She said Odom insisted that all the women he came in contact with sign confidentiality agreements. Wow. I think it's safe to say he'll be seriously mortified when he realizes how "not confidential" his activities at the Love Ranch have become. It's not just the cocaine, the fake Viagra and the prostitutes. We now know he selected his two companions out of a lineup, which apparently is how they do it at brothels. We know that he had been texting with a working girl named Madison Montag, who is the brothel's token transgender prostitute, although in the end he selected two other "girls." We've seen the surveillance video from the first day and the credit card receipt showing a charge of $75,000. This really is a sad and disturbing story on so many levels. Based on what I've read Odom is still a very sick man and a full recovery is by no means guaranteed. It will be wonderful if he does recover, but at that point he'll be in for a very different kind of hurt.

Friday afternoon update: There are unofficial reports that Odom is improving slightly - he may have opened his eyes and some sites are even saying he "communicated verbally," i.e., spoke. Maybe. I had an admittedly strange thought about what could happen if he does fully recover. Given Odom's struggles with the harsh and unforgiving spotlight of fame, I'm guessing he won't be pleased to learn that the whole world knows he went to a brothel, did cocaine, took a sexual enhancement supplement and spent the week-end screwing his brains out with not one but two prostitutes, at a reported cost of $75,000.

Friday morning update: I now know what Kanye West is up to, or at least what Kardashian employer E! wants us to think he's up to: he's home watching the kids (his daughter North and Kourtney's three kids.) That's a little hard for me to picture but, you know, whatever. Read about it here.

And one more thing about Kanye and Kim: back in August, 2013, a few weeks after Miss North West was born, I wrote that I gave Kimye two years as a couple, tops. (Read it here.) That would have taken them to August of this year, by which time I was pretty sure that they would have fallen out of love, or lust, or whatever it is that they're in, and gone their separate ways. August has come and gone, of course, and I humbly admit I was wrong. Apparently Kimye is still going strong. I still can't see them celebrating their 10th anniversary, and possibly not even their 5th, but for better or worse, they're still together now, and that's something.

Original post:

The big news in pop culture this week, of course, is the sad situation with Lamar Odom. As I'm writing on Thursday afternoon, things don't look good for Odom, although there have been no official announcements about his condition, one way or the other, from the hospital or the Kardashians. Jesse Jackson visited the hospital yesterday then announced that Odom was "improving," although he walked that back slightly later in the day. Today, apparently TMZ is reporting that Odom shows no signs of improvement and doctors are telling family members to expect the worst, even as there are reports that he may have squeezed Khloé's hand, or maybe it was Kim's hand. As an example of the feeding frenzy around this story, the Hollywood Life website posted contradictory stories an hour and seven minutes apart:

12.45 p.m. Lamar Odom Opens Eyes And Squeezes Kim Kardashian's Hand In Hospital -- Report
1.52 p.m. Lamar Odom: Kardashian's Hopes Fading As Doctors Say His Condition Worsens

My thoughts:

Where's Kanye? Kim flew to Las Vegas with Khloé Tuesday night. It's being reported that she canceled a baby shower scheduled for this week-end, and will be returning to LA for a doctor's appointment on Friday. Who's missing from all this? Her husband. I've been following this story pretty closely all around the internet and not one, not a single one of the many, many stories I've read has said anything about Kanye West. It's as if he doesn't exist.

Asking For Privacy. It's now standard practice for any celebrity experiencing almost any kind of life event to request "privacy at this difficult time," and apparently the Kardashians have requested the same. I don't mean to be disrespectful but there's more than a little irony there. The Kardashians are requesting privacy? Really? Isn't their entire empire built on letting it all hang out on camera? I promise I'm not being snarky when I say that that ship has sailed. The media abhors a vacuum and it's now been almost 48 hours since the story broke. In the absence of any comments from the K's or Odom's doctors, pretty much everyone else is rushing to talk, with or without any actual, factual information. There's just no way to stop it.

As Famous As I Wanna Be: I've written before about the perils of fame in America and one of the undercurrents of the Odom story is that hitching his star to the Kardashian fame machine is at least part of what led him to this point. True? Maybe, partly. His ex-girlfriend, mother to his three children (one of whom died of SIDS,) has said they were together for 10 years, and got engaged, but he always refused to get married. Then, shortly after they broke up, he married Khloé a month after meeting her. Was the opportunity to get famous on her television show at least part of the appeal? In August, 2013, when Odom's substance abuse and DUI first came to light, Allison Samuels wrote about Odom at The Daily Beast, indicating that he longed for Kardashian-level fame:

“He wanted all the fame and fortune the Kardashian family could give him, but never considered the price he’d pay for it.’’
That price, says the friend, has come in the form of constant cameras and media attention pointed his way. The media’s never-ending obsession with the Kardashian clan quickly began to cause the NBA player tremendous emotional distress, according to those who know him well.

“Lamar was a second-level sports star, particularly on a team like the Lakers with Kobe Bryant,’’ said one former Lakers player. “Not sure he understood that, but he wasn’t in Us and People magazine every week. There was a limit in interest in him off the court. But the Kardashians have an all-consuming fame that Lamar was not prepared for at all. It really is that old saying of ‘Be careful what you wish for.’ He wished for fame, but this hadn’t been on his own terms.’’

… “Not sure why the Lakers agreed to let him do that show at all,’’ says a teammate. “It was a big distraction for him and the team. But he wanted that celebrity so bad that Phil Jackson and others just didn’t want to deny him.
Kris Jenner

In a story written last night, Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports talks about the costs of that fame:

In recent days too, the Kardashians refused to stop exploiting Odom on that reality show, turning what appeared to be a lost soul in crisis reaching out to his ex-wife only to have his phone calls manufactured into Khloe-Kim argument fodder for one more dreadful episode.
Sex, drugs, a disconsolate Khloe, and Kobe leaving the Lakers locker room at the MGM Grand Arena to get to the hospital. Poor Lamar Odom, unwittingly delivering them a trailer.
So, Khloe ended up at his bedside in Vegas, with her mother, Kris Jenner, dramatically pacing outside Sunrise Hospital in Vegas. The Rev. Jesse Jackson emerged onto the scene to make public proclamations. All the way until now, Odom played the part of a prop, a recurring character in the Kardashian cesspool.
Truth be told, the Kardashians transformed Odom’s frailties and flaws into a societal fascination. Around the Lakers, they would always tell you that the scrutiny of the show played a part in his undoing, that it made a largely shy and private guy far more exposed and vulnerable than he ever imagined. Privately, Odom would tell friends that he never imagined the impact that an entanglement with the Kardashians’ glare would have on his existence.
“You can get tickets for the Oscars, some good perks,” he once told a friend, “but I had no idea what the rest of it would be like.”

How will the story end?  There's no way to know right now. It's just sad.

In A Cubs Frame Of Mind

When I sent this tweet out on August 21, a play-off game at Wrigley seemed like an impossible dream.

Now the first pitch is just a few hours away. If the Cubs can win both home games, it's on to the NLCS!  Go Cubs!

It Could Happen Again

Really, People, Hire An Editor!

What's wrong with this picture, or more specifically, with these words, taken from the people.com article about Pippa Middleton?

In happier times, Pippa and Nico, who works for a bank in Geneva, had took a short vacation in Venice, Italy, in April, just before the birth of her niece Princess Charlotte. A few days after leaving Venice, they were spotted having a romantic dinner date in London.

And Pippa has been spending a lot of time with ex-boyfriend James Matthews. Not only was he by her side on vacation (along with brother James, his girlfriend Donna Air, and parents Carol and Michael) in St. Barts recently, they also competed in the grueling Otillo race in Sweden together (he was James Middleton's teammate but the group ran half the course as a foursome) .

So what's wrong? Consider:

1. In the first sentence of the first paragraph: "had took a short vacation in Venice..." Really? Had "took"? You don't need a Masters in Journalism to know that it should be "had taken." Really.

2. In the second sentence of the second paragraph, Pippa's mother's name is misspelled. Non-royalty buffs might not know that her name is spelled "Carole," but I don't think it's expecting too much for the people at People to know. Really.

Finally, for extra credit, there's an extra space in front of the period at the end of the 2nd paragraph, which just makes the whole thing look messy.

On This Day In History: October 7, 1915

What was happening 100 years ago? The New York Times archive provides a fascinating glimpse, with the complete paper from this day in 1915 now available online. Although the country and the world were in the throes of World War 1, which had started on July 28, 1914 and wouldn't end until November 11, 1918, the lead story was about the personal life of President Woodrow Wilson:

"President to wed Mrs. Norman Galt, intimate friend of his daughters; also comes out for woman suffrage."

If you're not familiar with the quaint-sounding word "suffrage," it refers to the right to vote, which American women wouldn't enjoy nationally for five more years.

Other headlines:
  • Wilson indorses woman suffrage [Note: "indorse" is not a typo, that's how the headline is written. According to dictionary.com, it means, no surprise, "endorse."]
  • All allied envoys leave Sofia; Bulgar ultimatum sent to Serbs; more French and British troops land"
  • Greece aroused by cabinet crisis
  • Venizelos says: "Greece will keep her word to Serbia to the last man and the last drachma"
  • French take a hill in foe's second line
  • Midvale steel company heads big merger
  • President favors ample defense
  • British troops land at Saloniki
I know almost nothing about World War 1 and not much more about the process by which women finally got the right to vote in America. The paper in total consists of 20 pages (and cost one penny,) and I could spend most the the day paging through it and learning about life in America 100 years ago today. I probably won't do that, although it's tempting, and the entire archive is behind the Times' paywall, so I can't disappear completely into the day-to-day world of 1915. Still, if you'd like to read about the president's fiancée and the great war, click here

Blake Shelton

Mid-morning update:  I often say that People loves a good celebrity divorce and it continues to be true. This is actually the second cover story devoted to the Blake/Miranda divorce; the first was dated August 3:

Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert Divorce: What Went Wrong?

I also have my usual media literacy reminder about the new cover story. With headline language including "more details" and a quote ("I'm in a good place") readers are clearly supposed to think that People scored an actual interview with Shelton. Based on the teaser story at people.com however, this is almost certainly not the case. All the info in the online article is attributed to a "close friend of the country singer," and "another pal," a good indication that Shelton did not, in fact, "open up" about his divorce to the magazine.

Blake Shelton Moving On: 'He's Not Someone to Sit Around'

Not much to say about this week's cover, except that I had been expecting that the Oregon shootings might be the main story. (I'm surprised, in a good way, that People chose not to feature Jim Carrey's ex-girlfriend, who apparently committed suicide a few days ago.) As for the Shonda Rhimes sidebar, People loves a weight loss story, but the Shonda story was posted on the website a few days ago and can you guess how she lost all that weight? Sensible eating and exercise, what a surprise.

There's also a Bristol Palin story on the website today, although poor Bristol didn't rate a cover mention. Apparently she's vacationing in Hawaii at 7 months pregnant, accompanied by her first child Tripp and her younger brother Trig. (What do you suppose she'll name the new baby? Twig? Twilight? Tron? The possibilities boggle the mind.) I admit I'm still curious about the baby-to-be, and more specifically, who the proud daddy-to-be might be. Is it ex-fiancé Dakota Meyer? Probably, but why the secrecy? As I've said before the whole thing is just weird. (Read what I was thinking when the pregnancy was first announced here.)  If you're curious, here's the picture:

How Things Look Today

Political Scientist Jonathan Bernstein is out with a new ranking of GOP candidates for president:

First Tier: Jeb! Bush and Marco Rubio
Second Tier: John Kasich
Third Tier: Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie and Rick Santorum

What about the others? No chance:

Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and five other candidates remain, [Cruz, R. Paul, Pataki, Graham and Gilmore] but they either fail to have conventional credentials for the job or don't hold a sufficient number of orthodox Republican positions. Or too many people just plain dislike them. Could one of them win? Only if I'm reading the evidence wrong. Or if what political scientists think they know about nominations is wrong. And so far, I see no sign of that.

Bernstein says Bobby Jindal might be the next candidate to drop out; read the article here

This Day In History, 1985: Rock Hudson Dies Of AIDS

Issue dated October 21, 1985
The Monroe Report

Has it really been 30 years? Rock Hudson died of AIDS on October 2, 1985, and thirty years later it can be easy to forget what a big deal it was at the time, a key milestone in the fight against AIDS. Here's how People's cover story explains it:

Rock Hudson's death, at age 59 on October 2 at his Beverly Hills home, brought his life into bold relief. The circumstances of his demise assured the actor a place in Hollywood history that his films could not. As the first public figure to announce his affliction with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, Hudson had stunned the world and shattered an image cultivated over three decades. Hudson's admission, 10 weeks before his death, was cause for canonization in both the medical and gay communities. "His illness and death have moved the fight against AIDS ahead more in three months than anything in the past three years," says Bruce Decker, chairman of California's AIDS Advisory Board Committee. "I'm sure Rock's coming out will stand as a landmark in the gay community," says activist Armistead Maupin.

"Big Boy Pants"? Is This How A President Talks?

Image result for jeb bush
photo from the Huffington Post.

Really, Jeb!? Big boy pants? As I said a few posts ago, I know Donald Trump is getting under your skin and your path to the (maybe) nomination is a lot harder than you thought it would be. Still, saying that Trump needs to "put on his big boy pants" doesn't make you sound like the grown-up in the room. Is that really the best you can do?

Read the story here.
